Frequently asked Questions in relation to the Religion of Spiritualism

Is there a Devil?

Not within the Religion of Spiritualism or in any of the Teachings received from Spirit.

It is accepted, however, that people do have their own personal ‘devils’ and in some cases, people within Spiritualism feel they are influenced by ‘evil’ spirits. This is usually the outcome of  not having a sound knowledge base of their own and, therefore, taking on board, everything they see, hear or read about Spiritualism, mediumship and spirit.

If Spiritualism allowed a Devil within its teachings it would effectively remove the Fifth Principle from its Philosophy for Personal Responsibility does not allow for the luxury of an outside source, of any description, on which an individual can offload his or her obligations and responsibilities.

“Spiritualists have no devil as a clothes-horse on which to hang their misdemeanours and misdeeds, although some have been known to blame the influence of spirit for their negative behaviour and such assertions should be treated with the contempt they deserve. People are in control of their bodies; people are in control of their emotions; people are in control of their minds and if they cannot control them then they need physical help because there will be a physical cause inherent thereto.

Man must learn to accept responsibility for every thought, every word and every deed which emanates from him; man must also learn to accept responsibility for every thought, every word and every deed which does not emanate from him but which he knows should have been given expression. Too often people will deliberately bury their heads in the sand and refuse to think about situations in which they are involved in the hope that they will go away; people will also remain quiet when they know they should stand, speak and be counted; people will often refrain from taking action in situations where it is apparent there is a need for them so to do. People are responsible for inaction as well as action which makes understanding Personal Responsibility a truly daunting proposition.” See Fifth Principle

Spiritualism is the thinking man’s religion and it is a basic requirement that a Spiritualist, while accepting the Seven Principles, takes on the implications within these Principles, especially that contained in the Fifth Principle

If any reader needs a Devil, that’s fine, but please do not ever ascribe such a concept to the religion of Spiritualism as there are enough misconceptions regarding it without adding more.
