Because of the nature of this Glossary, the descriptions will not be brief, as is usually the case, in such definitions. The subject matter is not general knowledge to many people so it was felt that in order to assist in understanding the terminology more readily, substantial definitions should be given:

F

Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951  This Act is on the UK Statute Books and every medium working in the United Kingdom should have a copy of it. It is a very short document but a very important one. It is possible to be fined up to £2,000 or even to be imprisoned if a case, which can only be brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions succeeds. It also points out that holding an object of any description will be classified as a fraudulent device so mediums should never mix psychic and readings. Linking to spirit does not require a tool, or psychic aid, of any description so the two types of readings should be kept entirely separate.

This Act was lobbied for by outstanding Spiritualists at that time, brought about by the fact that the physical medium, Helen Duncan, had been tried and found guilty under the Witchcraft Act 1735 and s4 of The Vagrancy Act 1824. Helen was the last medium ever to be tried under the Witchcraft Act but mediums today are still prosecuted under the FMA 1951 and while not many people in the public sector are aware that this Act is in place to protect them, the odd cases are referred to the DPP and are acted upon.

Healing - A Healer is a medium whose focus on the application of spirit healing. There are two main types of Mediumship, ie Mental and Physical mediumship. The development of the ability to heal falls within Mental mediumship although healing can bring about very powerful and very physical effects. Spirit healing is 'the laying on of hands and prayer'. Although spirit healing is usually of a contact nature, sending healing (absent healing) can be just as effective and is used when it is not possible to be with the patient.

Perhaps one of the most famous spirit healers was Harry Edwards (1893 – 1976) whose sanctuary in Shere was visited by patients from all over the world.

Another renowed healer is:  “Matthew Manning (1955 -- )  a world famous healer who lectures and demonstrates techniques all over the world. He has been involved in more scientific research and testing than any other healer in the world and has addressed The Royal Society of Medicine and spoken to MPs in the Houses of Parliament about his healing work” www.matthewmanning.com/mmwelcome.htm

As in all forms of mediumship, the medium (healer) is the person still living on earth who acts as a channel for the healing energies to be brought to earth through the agency of his healing guides.  Mediums in the UK have to undergo an extensive theory and practical course before they wil be assessed by their peers and then registered as qualified healers.

In the UK it is necessary for healing mediums to be registered with a parent body which will take responsibility for its healers and their training and give them insurance cover.

Incarnate  -  This word basically means 'in the body' so if a spirit is called incarnate then it is still living on earth; discarnate spirit are those who have left this earth and are now dwelling in the spirit world.

Independent Voice   -   This is a phenomenon produced by physical mediumship. The medium normally enters a deep trance state in order for the spirit operators to externalise ectoplasm from his/her body. This is then formed into a voice box through which discarnate spirit speak to those present. The voices can come from any part of the room and will be recognised by friends and families of the spirits speaking. Everyone present can hear the voices and be part of an amazing spiritual experience.

Inspirational Speaking -  Many mediums, when serving Spiritualist Churches, will allow their spirit guides and inspirers to draw close and influence their thinking and hence their speaking. Quite often, even when the medium has prepred an address, when they stand to speak, they move away from it as the spirit influence grows stronger. It is not only mediums who receive information in this manner; sometimes when talking to people we will say something, or give some advice, and later wonder where 'it all came from. It is important to remember that we are spirit, albeit living in a physical body and it is possible for our own spirits to inspire us. Don't ever discount your own beautiful spirit and its inspirational abilities.

Inspirational Writing -  This is the same as Inspirational Speaking but in this case instead of the thoughts being verbalised, they are written down; inspirational writing, just as with speaking, can be an influence from a spiri guide or from our own spirits. It doesn't really matter whereit comes from; if it is uplifting and inspires others then that is all that is required.
